Rider's Breeden Honored by the MAAC
LAWRENCEVILLE--Freshman Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) of the Rider University softball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all games the first week of the 2012 season it was announced Tuesday.
"That's awesome," said head coach Tricia Carroll. "She had a nice opening weekend to her career."
Breeden, a 5-3 catcher, batted .308 in her first five collegiate games with four RBI and three doubles as Rider played at the UNCG Spartan Classic in Greensboro against Utah, Drexel and UNC-Greensboro.
"We played some good teams that had quality pitching and Allysen did a great job," Carroll said. "We saw some high level competition and she didn't look at all like a freshman."
Breeden was also a perfect 13 for 13 in fielding chances from behind the plate.
Rider travels to Fairfax, Virginia for the Patriot Classic with Cornell and Akron that will be hosted by George Mason March 2-4.
"The whole weekend, all of the freshmen didn't look like freshmen and that was good to see," Carroll said. "They played confident and composed. We're excited about this group."
The Broncs host Drexel at 2pm on March 6 for the 2012 home opener at Herb and Joan Young on the Lawrenceville campus.
