Rider's Molloy and Bailey Honored by the MAAC

EDISON--Senior Brian Molloy and freshman Wayco Bailey of the Rider University men's swimming and diving teams were named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Male Swimmer and Diver of the Week it was announced Tuesday evening.

Both were honored for all competition January 14-20, 2013.

Molloy, from Toms River, New Jersey (Toms River High School East), won the 50 free (21.82), the 500 free (4:43.69) and the 1000 free (10:02.88) as Rider defeated Saint Peter's in a MAAC meet on Saturday.  Molloy also swam on the winning 400 free relay (3:13.48).

"Brian's efforts on Saturday were critical to the team winning the meet," said head coach Steve Fletcher.  "Saint Peter's has a very strong team and with so many of our swimmers out of the lineup or limited due to illness, he really stepped up and got us the win."

Bailey, from Casper, Wyoming (Natrona County High School), won the one-meter dive at Saint Peter's with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 314.18 and he finished runner-up on the three-meter board (293.40).

"Wayco did an amazing job this past weekend," diving coach Eric Blevins said.  "All of his work fine tuning is beginning to pay off."

"It is great that Wayco made the NCAA Zone meet as a freshman," said Fletcher.  "Having him experience that type of meet so early in his career is going to make him that much stronger in the years ahead."

This is the second week in a row that Rider swept the male awards from the conference with senior swimmer Johnny Funk and junior diver Trevor Hiller bringing home the hardware last week.

Molloy was previously honored this season by the MAAC for all competition November 12-18 and November 26-December 2, 2012 and it is the fourth MAAC award for Molloy in his career, having also been recognized October 25, 2010.

Molloy was also named the Rider Male Athlete of the Month for November, 2012 and his times are among the top five in five different events in the conference.

Rider swims again on January 26 in the final meet of the 2012-13 regular season, at Rutgers (women) with Fordham (men/women) and Yale (men).

The MAAC Championships are February 14-16 in Buffalo, New York at Erie Community College.
