Rider University at Rutgers Invitational – Day 2

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – After finishing day one in 12th place, the Rider University golf team dropped one back, finishing the Rutgers Invitational in 13th place out of 17 teams.
The Broncs shot a final team score of 308 for a total of 907. On Friday, the Broncs played the first 36 holes of the tournament, where they shot a team score of 300 in the first round before shooting 299 in the second round.
USC Upstate won the tournament with a three-round team score of 855.
“Conditions were definitely tougher this morning,” head coach Jason Barry said. “The wind blew and it was cold. It made it tough if you were off a little bit because the misses would be exaggerated. In general, we just didn't play our best today.”
Senior captain James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) turned in a final round score of 73, finishing tied for 15th out of 90 golfers. On Friday, Buttermark shot a first round of 74 and a second round of 72.
Buttermark finished with one of the 12 eagles throughout the three rounds and was tied for the second best par five average (4.58).
“James played very consistent today,” Barry said. “He made a lot of pars and grinded his way around the course. He didn't have his best but found a way to get his ball in the hole. On a day like today, having a guy who is able to score out without having your best is impressive. He worked hard today.”
Sophomore Tom Yarson (Montgomery) finished his third round with a final score of 73, ending his day tied for 27th. He had rounds of 74 and 75 yesterday. Yarson was tied for fifth in total birdies (8) and sixth in par four average (4.15).
“Yarson and Buttermark played solid,” Barry said.
Junior Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) completed his day with a round of 78, tied for 69th. He finished with a first round 77 and a second round 80 on Friday.
“Clark grinded out a good round for us,” Barry said about the junior.
Junior Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and freshman Aaron Simone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) struggled on the course today for the Broncs. Simone turned in a final round 84, tied for 75th and Liddell finished with a round of 87, ending the tournament in 81st. Both Liddell and Simone had rounds of 79 and 74 yesterday.
“We still made some big numbers,” Barry said about the overall team performance. “The guys who struggled with their ball striking had a tough time in the wind today. We need to eliminate the big numbers and improve our ball striking. These guys want to play well. We will take away the positives and get back to work on Monday.”
The Broncs next event takes place on Sept. 22-23, when Rider travels to Ithaca, N.Y. to participate in the Cornell Invitational.
