Rider Opens at Princeton New Year's Invitational
PRINCETON—The Rider University men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2015-16 indoor season at Princeton's New Year's Invitational Friday evening, competing against Monmouth University and the host Tigers at historic Jadwin Gymnasium.
“It was a good start to the season,” said head coach Bob Hamer. “We had some really strong performances and some really good efforts.”
For the Rider men, sophomore Tyree Adams (Hamilton/Hamilton West) won the long jump with an IC4A qualifying distance of 23'8” and junior Johnathan Jackson (Roselle/Magnet) won the mile with a personal best of 4:25.22.
“Tyree had a big meet with an IC4A qualifier as well as a PR in the 60,” Hamer said. “If he stays healthy he will be a force on the team. And Jackson had a strong race and it was nice to see him get the win. It is nice to see him move up in distance and have success.”
For the Bronc women, sophomore Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor/West Windsor Plainsboro HS South) was second in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying distance of 53'8.50”, sophomore Cleopatra Morrison (Long Branch) was second in the 60 meter dash (7.77), senior Olivia Rosenberger (North Wales, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) was second in the triple jump (37'3”) and freshman Ashley Berry (Somerset/Franklin) was third in the shot put (41'10”).
“Sandvig had a really big throw in the weight to start us off,” Hamer said. “She has consistently improved and she was big time tonight. Morrison is off to a good start after a few setbacks in the fall. She is a great competitor.”
Also for the Bronc men, senior Tom McLaughlin (Egg Harbor/Egg Harbor Township) was second in the mile (4:31.78), senior Darien Edwards (South Orange/St. Benedict's) was second in the 600 meter with a personal record time of 1:20.26 and freshman Allen Killiebrew (Carney's Point/Penns Grove) was second in the triple jump (47'1.75”).
The men's 4x400 relay of junior Christopher Reubel (Moorestown), Edwards, Jackson and freshman Alvin Abraham (Egg Harbor/Egg Harbor Township) was second with a time of 3:22.69.
Junior Kyle Bryant (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill HS East) was third in the high jump (6'5.50”) and third in the triple jump (46'2”), freshman Nate Bowie (Matawan) was third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.28) after posting an IC4A qualifying time of 8.21 in the preliminaries, senior Sean Mulqueen (Dunellen) was third in the mile (4:46.87), sophomore Anthony Ardino (Bloomfield) was third in the 1000 meter with a personal best time of 2:36.79 and junior Erik Adamcik (Hampton/North Hunterdon) was third in the pole vault (15'5”).
“Bowie qualifying for IC4As is a great start to his career,” Hamer added. “Some of the freshmen had a really good meet.”
After the break for final exams and the holidays, Rider returns to action at the Rutgers Invitational January 8-9.
“We need to maintain our fitness over the next month and be ready to return to action at Rutgers in January,” Hamer said.
