Rider 8th of 15 at Rain-Shortened Cornell
ITHACA, NY- The Rider University golf team placed eighth of 15 teams at the rain-shortened Cornell Invitational this weekend. The Broncs had rounds of 314 and 301 to finish with a 615.
Rider played 15 holes on Sunday that did not count when play could not be completed. "It was a little disappointing because the teams that we were right behind we were playing better than today and would have passed them," said Rider head coach Bob Whartenby.
The second round that was suspended on Saturday was completed Sunday morning before the rains stopped play for good. "We did alright," Whartenby said. "I'm proud of the guys. It was just tough out there. It was a tough course and it was overcast, windy and cold and then wet."
On Saturday Rider sophomore Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot a Rider-record 65 on the par 72 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, two strokes off the course record, and finished sixth among the 79 golfers with a 36-hole total of 147 (82/65).
"That was the lowest Rider round in history," said Whartenby, a former Bronc player who along with Tyler Brewington '09 had a six-under par round in his career, the previous Rider record. "What he did yesterday was something special."
"I've never had a day like that," said Wolgast, who won the FDU Invitational last year and was 13th at this tournament one year ago. "In the first round I had a quadruple bogey, a triple bogey and a double bogey all in the first 15 holes, and in the second round I hit it about the same except I didn't have any big numbers. I made everything I looked at. Everything was going my way."
"It was pretty impressive," Whartenby said. "He actually was eight under at one point but he bogeyed the last hole, a tough par four."
Rider graduate student Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) finished 34th with a 154 (76/78), tied with sophomore Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass/Hopkinton) (75/79). Accorsini was in 12th place after the first round.
LeFante was the medalist at St. Bonaventure's Leo Keenen tournament and was runner-up at the Rutgers Invitational this season.
Junior Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, PA/Saint Stephen's Episcopal) finished 58th overall with a 160 (81/79).
Rider plays at William & Mary's Joe Agee Invitational October 10-11.
