Rider's first aquatics director, Rich Coppola revived the men's varsity swimming and diving program in 1968, and founded the women's program in 1984. Coppola coached at Rider for 30 years and won over 250 meets. Four of Coach Coppola's men's teams won New Jersey Championships, three finished runner-up in the Metropolitan Conference, and two more finished runner up in the MAAC. More importantly, his 1995 men's squad ranked eighth in the nation in team grade point average. Coppola's last seven women's teams were honored nationally for their high grade point average, and he was named the Metropolitan Conference Women's Coach of the Year. A winner of the Master's Coach Award, Coppola has represented Rider and the United States in clinics in Brazil and the Dominican Republic.
