John Lucerne became Rider's third Division I All-American in wrestling in 1985 when as a sophomore; he placed fourth in the nation at 126 pounds. He is currently one of only three Bronc grapplers to achieve 100 victories, finishing with a mark of 107-47. A freshman All-American at 134 pounds, Lucerne dropped one weight class as a sophomore to win the first of his two East Coast Conference wrestling crowns. Despite an early loss in the NCAA's to three-time NCAA champion Barry Davis, he twice turned Davis on his back. In the consolation rounds, he reeled off victories over both the NCAA Division II and III champions. Lucerne followed up his 34-14 mark with a 21-12 record as a junior and placed second in the ECC's, winning an NCAA wildcard birth. As a senior, He again captured the ECC crown and advanced to the NCAA's. Lucerne, who also wrestled for the USA team of Collegiate All-Stars in Italy and Spain, was a three-time NCAA qualifier.
