David Rowan was undefeated in inter collegiate competition. He swam on the All Eastern Championship team. He held every Middle Atlantic AAU championship title from 50-yard freestyle to 1500 meters. He was selected as the best long distance swimmer in the East by the AAU in 1940 and swam in the Billy Rose Aquacade at the 1939 World's Fair. Rowan won the President's Cup in Washington, D.C., for the three mile swimming championship. He set a new American record in the 200-meter backstroke in 1976 in the 60-64 age class at the National AAU Masters Swimming Championship. He also took the 150-meter freestyle and won a third gold medal for swimming the butterfly leg on the 200-meter medley relay.
