Rider at Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships
Rider Men 2nd of 19 / Women 3rd of 19 after Day One
PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Both the Rider University men's and women's swimming and diving teams are competing at the ECAC Championships, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh Friday through Sunday.
For the Rider women's team on the opening day, senior Amanda Burke (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) won the one-meter dive with a Pittsburgh pool record score of 321.30 with junior Brianna Burns (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) placing fourth in the 50 free (24.08). Burke, a three-time NCAA qualifier, was named the 2010 MAAC Diver of the Meet last weekend.
For the Rider men, sophomore Brendan Cavallaro (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) placed second in the three-meter dive (294.15), freshman Johnny Funk (Las Vegas, Nev./Southeast Career & Tech. Acad.) placed third in the 200 IM (1:52.25) and senior Paul Apostolakis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) was third in the three-meter dive (267.70).
Also for the Bronc women, senior Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex/Vernon Township) placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:09.79), freshman Addie Oswald (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) was seventh in the 500 free (5:03.31), junior Aisley Carter (Clarksburg, Md./Walter Johnson) placed ninth in the one-meter dive (182.55) and junior Alicia Fimple (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) was 13th in the 200 IM (2:11.35).
Also for the Rider men, freshman Brian Molloy (Toms River/Toms River HS East) placed fifth in the 500 free (4:35.92), junior Tom Smallwood (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was seventh in the three-meter dive (198.40), junior Ryan Nelthropp (Christiansted, V.I./St. Croix Country Day) placed ninth in the 200 IM (1:53.28), senior Scott Player (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala) was 10th in the 50 free (21.04), freshman Julien Hensen (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) placed 12th in the 200 IM (1:54.55) and senior Brian Brady (Turnersville/Gloucester Catholic) was 13th in the 50 free (21.52).
The women's 200 free relay of Burns, Fimple, freshman Katlyn Andrews (Lawrenceville/Notre Dame) and Tomasula placed fourth (1:37.55) with the 400 medley relay of Tomasula, senior Jennifer Sullivan (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), freshman Kelly O'Connor (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) and Burns also finishing fourth (3:55.24).
The men's 200 free relay of Player, Hensen, Molloy and Brady placed fifth (1:24.38) and the men's 400 medley relay of Funk, freshman Jeremy Chaudet (Branchburg/Somerville), Player and Brady placed sixth with a time of 3:26.52.
The Bronc women placed runner-up at the 2009 ECACs with the Rider men finishing third. Both teams placed runner-up at the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships this past weekend in Baltimore.
Competition continues on Saturday.
