Rider University 1, University of New Hampshire 1 (2 OT)
BURLINGTON, VT-The Broncs tied New Hampshire in the second round of the TD Bank Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont. "We played a very, very good game today against a strong team," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "We were solid across the board."
It was the second time in as many games this year that the Broncs played double overtime. "Hopefully they will not all be double overtime this year," Hounsome said. "But with the heat (90 degrees) and the extra time we played a lot of players, which is what we want this time of year."
For Rider (0-1-1) freshman Jody Sokol (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) took a pass from sophomore Alexis Coughlin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) and scored her first collegiate goal to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute of play.
"We were all inside the box and someone flicked the ball right over the keeper's hands and I just happen to be there and I put it in," said Sokol, who scored 12 of Bensalem High's 23 goals last year. "The intensity and physical contact is the biggest difference between high school and college."
"It was a nice finish by Jody," Hounsome said. "She hit the cross bar in overtime (five minutes into the first overtime) as well," Hounsome said. "She did very well today coming in off the bench, taking people on."
"I would like to be one of the leading scorers on the team this year," said Sokol, who currently shares the team lead in goals. "As a forward that is my job. The ultimate goal is for us to make the conference tournament and win the championship."
UNH (1-0-2) tied the score with a long goal into the top of the net mid-way through the second half.
"Their goal was a lot like the one on Friday," Hounsome said of the long goal that defeated Rider in overtime Friday against host Vermont.
Rider out-shot UNH 17-14. Rider had six corner kicks to UNH's four. "We had the better of the game today against a good team," Hounsome said.
Rider senior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made seven saves. "Alex played very well in goal," Hounsome said.
UNH goalie Erica Correa made eight saves.
Named to the all-tournament team were Rider senior Kimberly Reichel (Chester, N.J./Mendham), freshman Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) and freshman Becca Kape (Westfield, NJ/Westfield).
"Becca had another very good game today," Hounsome said of his rookie."She played 90 minutes. Jen Meier caused some problems for their defenders as well."
Rider hosts St. Francis-PA September 5. "This tournament prepared us for St. Francis," Hounsome said. "They play similar to what we've seen this weekend. We're looking forward to playing on the new turf. It will be a faster game."
