Rider Field Hockey Teaming Up for Bone Marrow Registry and Blood Drive
April 19 from 1p-4p

LAWRENCEVILLE--As part of the Northeast Conference Gives Back community service initiative, the Rider University field hockey team will be one of five organizations on the Lawrenceville campus to take part in a bone marrow registry and blood drive on April 19 from 1p-4p at the Bart Luedeke Center Cavalla Room.

"We really feel good about giving back to our community," said head coach Lori Hussong.  "We feel it touches the lives of some who are less fortunate than we are and in a way, 'puts us all on the same team'.  Involvement like this can bring a team together as well."

The drive, which will support the charitable organizations Be the Match and Community Blood Services, will strive to maximize bone marrow registrants and raise money to offset the costs of registering potential donors.

Bone marrow transplants can be used to treat patients with Hodgkin's disease, leukemia and solid-tumor cancers, such as breast or ovarian and the cheek swab results must be 'typed', much like DNA, to give more information about matching the donor with a recipient.

After winning the 2010 regular season and Northeast Conference tournament championships, the field hockey team looks to be a champion off the field by participating in and supporting this worthy cause, along with the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Group and three fraternities and sororities.

"As coaches we are very proud of our team when they 'step up' for each other on the field," Hussong added.  "This is a time where we can be so proud of these student-athletes as they 'step up' for others that they don't even know."

Statistically, less than 30% of adults and children who need a bone marrow transplant find a suitable match among their own family members.

Those wishing to donate to the upcoming bone marrow registry drive, may send a check payable to Be The Match Foundation, Attn: Bryan Spiegelberg/Be the Match, Rider University, 2083 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
