Rider at Fordham Fiasco

Men 7th, Women 10th

BRONX, NY-The Broncs competed in the Bronx in the 14-team Fordham Fiasco, held at Van Cortlandt Park Saturday. "We did pretty well," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "I thought the women competed very well. They did a great job of executing the race plan. For the men, with a young team many of them were running their first five mile race and they came through admirably."

For the Rider women, junior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) placed 20th overall among the 117 runners, covering the 3.1 mile course in 19:02.38.

"I felt really good today," said Elgin, a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team member last year. "This course has a lot of hills in it and is challenging. I'm in better shape this year so today was a little different than running here in the past."

Last week Elgin enjoyed her finest collegiate race to date, finishing second overall. "That was a real confidence boast for me," Elgin said.

Senior Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, PA/Spring Ford), fresh off her first place finish in the season opener last week, finished second among Broncs, 33rd overall, in 19:27.0

Also for the Rider women, junior Jillian Shutt (Lawrenceville, PA/Williamson) finished 44th in 19:49.0 and freshman Emily Ritter (Milsboro, DE/Sussex Tech) was fourth among Broncs, 68th overall in 20:13.7.

For the Rider men, freshman Anthony Dentino (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) finished first among the Broncs for the second time in as many collegiate races, 30th overall among the 105 runners, covering the five mile course in 26:43.41.

Junior Sean Donohue (Cliffwood Beach, NJ/Matawan) was second among Broncs, 39th overall, in 26:54.27.

Junior Sean McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, PA/La Salle) placed 52nd in 27:08.57.

"Our two Seans did a great job up front for us," Hamer said.

Junior Greg Wesh (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was 51st in 27:38.66.  "Greg ran a nice race," Hamer said.

Princeton University won both the men's and women's races.

Rider is off from competition until September 30 when the Broncs compete at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh. "The break will be good to get some more training in," Elgin said. "The Lehigh course is always important to me because we ran there a lot in high school."
