Rider at Mid-Atlantic Regional
PRINCESS ANNE, MD-The Rider men finished a best-ever 12th of 25 teams and the Rider women were 18th of 29 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, held on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday.
"The men had a goal of finishing in the top 15 and overall they ran a great race," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "We're trying to be a top-15 team (in the Region) on a regular basis and to get 12th was exciting. That's the best we've done. There are 30 teams in the Region but they all don't compete in this race every year."
For the Rider men, freshman Anthony Dentino (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) finished 59th of 183 runners, covering the 10,000 meter course in 32:02. "Anthony ran really well," Hamer said.
Junior Sean Donohue (Cliffwood Beach, NJ/Matawan) was next for the Broncs, finishing 62nd in 32:04. "Sean ran great up front," Hamer said.
Freshman Nasser Zayer (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) was third for the Broncs, finishing 86th in 32:46.
For the Rider women, senior Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, PA/Spring Ford) was the first Bronc to finish, covering the 6,000 meter course in 23:36 to place 63rd among the 199 women runners.
"The women ran solid," Hamer said. "I felt we were capable of being close to a top-15 team, but we did not execute the middle of the race as well as I hoped we would."
Junior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) was the second Bronc to finish, placing 80th in 24:06.
Also for the Rider men, senior Michael Lindner (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and junior Sean McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, PA/La Salle) finished together in 32:57 to place 92nd and 93rd. Sophomore Corey O'Neill (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) was 125th in 33:36
Rider competes again at the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park November 19. "The MAAC Championships and the IC4A/ECAC meets are what we focus on," Hamer said. "We're excited to go back to Van Cortlandt. We really want to do well in that meet."
