PISCATAWAY-The Broncs competed against Fordham and host Rutgers Saturday. The Rider men defeated Fordham while the Rider women lost to Rutgers and Fordham
For the Rider men, junior Johnny Funk (Las Vegas, Nev./Southeast Academy) won the 100 backstroke (52.07), the 200 backstroke (1:53.30) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay with junior Julien Hensen (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine), freshman Zach DeLillo (Reading, PA/Wilson) and freshman Drew Peterson (Boulder City, Nev./Boulder City).
"Johnny swam well," said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher. "His time in the 100 'fly was his lifetime best."
Peterson won the 400 individual medley (4:09.73), the 200 butterfly (1:55.00) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:52.15).
"Drew swam very well," Fletcher said. "The 200 butterfly went down to the last stroke." The second place time in that event was 1:55.41. "He had an outstanding kick and was able to touch him out."
Hensen won the 100 breaststroke (59.36) and the 200 breaststroke (2:12.17).
Junior Brian Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) won the 500 freestyle (4:49.42)
Senior Brendan Cavallaro (Middleboro, Mass/Middleboro) won the 3-meter dive (333.25) and placed second in the 1-meter (290.15).
Sophomore Trevor Hiller (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) won the 1-meter dive (320.90) and placed second in the 3-meter dive (284.10).
"Our diving going 1-2 in both events was critical to us winning the meet," Fletcher said.
For the Rider women, junior Kelly O'Connor (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) placed second in the 200 butterfly.
"The women's meet was very competitive," Fletcher said. "Fordham has won the A-10 and Rutgers is very competitive in the Big East so the competition was very stiff today. Our women had some really challenging races today but I think it was an important experience for us as we prepare for the conference championships."
The Broncs take to the pool again February 16-18 at the MAAC Championships.
