Rider at Penn Relays Day 2

Rider at Penn Relays-Day Two

PHILADELPHIA, PA-The Broncs are competing in the 118th edition of the Penn Relay Carnival, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

"Unfortunately, it was a disappointing day of us," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer.  "We didn't compete well today. Sometimes you have to have days like to today to realize what you have to work on. You learn a lot more from losing than you do from winning."

On Friday, Rider's shuttle hurdles relay team broke a program record but was later disqualified.

The SHR team of junior James Burroughs (West Orange), junior David Hightower (Easton, Pa./Easton), sophomore Matthew Millemann (Hillsborough) and senior Ron Moore (Nashville, Tenn./John Overton) placed third in a time of 58.75, breaking a Rider record that stood since 1989.

"The officials said over the last two hurdles one of our runners intentionally knocked the hurdles over," Hamer said. 'That is a violation so it was just an unfortunate thing. That was an old record that would have been nice to have."

The Distance Medley Relay team of junior Greg Wesh (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), junior Dave Brown (Ewing), senior David South (Sergeantsville, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and graduate student Mike Soroko (Kinnelon) placed 12th of 24 with a time of 10:21.05.

In the long jump, sophomore Steven Brown (Penns Grove) placed 16th of 27 with a mark of 21'10.75".

The 4 x 100 relay team of  Burroughs,  Hightower, sophomore Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington) and freshman Anthony DeFranco (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston) finished in 44.02.

The 4 x 400 relay team of Baptiste, freshman Michael Breen (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), Millemann and Moore finished in 3:23.45.

Rider will compete in four events on Saturday at Franklin Field while the rest of the Broncs will compete at TCNJ in the Lion Invitational. "I'm always looking forward to tomorrow," Hamer said, "because I'm hopeful it will be much better than today. We have some things to work on to put ourselves back together for the MAAC Championships the following week."
