Broncs at Monmouth on ESPN3 Thursday
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ—The Rider men’s basketball team will play the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the 2013-14 season Thursday at Monmouth University and it will be broadcast on ESPN3.
It will also be the first-ever MAAC game for Monmouth, a former Northeast Conference foe of the Broncs.
Rider (2-4) is coming off a runner-up finish at the Cable Car Classic, where the Broncs defeated Rice before losing to North Dakota State in the Title Game.
The Hawks (3-4) are coming off winning the Barclay’s Center Classic, hosted by Monmouth at the MAC. Monmouth snapped a four game losing streak with a pair of wins at home over Mississippi Valley State and North Carolina A&T.
Monmouth’s 6’6” junior guards Deon Jones and Andrew Nicholas were named co-MVPs of the Classic. For the season, Jones is averaging 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while Nicholas is contributing 14.6 points per game.
Rider senior Anthony Myles (Dover, DE/Poly-Tech) was named to the All-Tournament team at the Cable Car Classic, averaging 25.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the two games played at Santa Clara University. Myles scored a career-high 27 points, including the 1,000th of his career, in Rider’s win over Rice.
For the season Myles is averaging a team-high 18.7 points per game, along with 4.3 rebounds. Rider senior Daniel Stewart (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti), who also reached the 1,000-point plateau this season, is contributing 14.8 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds per game. Rider defeated Monmouth 65-62 last season at Rider. The last time Rider visited the MAC the Broncs won 74-62 during the 2011-12 season.
Rider and Monmouth were NEC rivals for five years in the 1990s. Rider defeated Monmouth in the 1994 NEC Title Game at Rider and lost the 1996 Title Game at Monmouth.
Rider is 12-4 vs. Monmouth since the Broncs left the NEC. Rider has won the last six games against Monmouth and eight of the last nine meetings with the Hawks.
The Broncs and Hawks have met 38 times since the series began in 1974-75 with Rider winning 23. The last time Monmouth beat Rider was during the 2006-07 season (67-66).
Following the Monmouth game Rider returns home December 8 to host new MAAC rival Quinnipiac. The 2pm contest will also be Academic Achievement Day, as all of the Rider student-athletes with a 3.0 or better grade point average will be honored at halftime.
