Baseball

Senior Sean Olson (Vineland, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) hit a two-run home run in the tenth inning to give Rider a come-from-behind win over Temple. Junior Nick Wojnowski (Baldwin, Md./Calvert Hall) hit a three-run, pinch-hit double with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning, tying the score at 8-8. The double capped a six-run ninth inning. Junior Kris Brown (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) pitched two innings of shut out relief, allowing just two hits and striking out one to record the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Steve Galella (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) had two hits and two RBI. Senior James Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) and freshman Brandon Cotten (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) also contributed two hits each. At Princeton senior Derek Caldwell (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Rider took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Sean Olson homered and Steve Galella hit an RBI double. In the win over Canisius sophomore pitcher Patrick Devlin (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) pitched eight and one-third innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five, improving to 2-1 on the season. Senior James Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) came in from right field to strike out the last two batters for his third save of the season and 28th of his career. Hayes gave the Broncs a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI double.

Softball

Against Rutgers junior Candice Harris (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) had two hits, including a home run, three RBI and scored three runs. Sophomore Brittany Eckett (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) hit a double and a home run, her sixth of the season.  Junior Allyson Melia (Toms River/Toms River HS North) and sophomore Amanda Centeno (Ventura, Calif./Buena) each had two hits. At Siena junior Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) doubled and had three hits, including her 100th and Candice Harris homered twice.

Track & Field

At Duke sophomore John Clark (Pennsville) placed fourth in the discus with an IC4A qualifying distance of 161’ 6”. Senior Tabatha Haskins (Medford/Shawnee) was second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.35m, senior Kelly Kajunski  (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) placed fourth in the high jump (5’5”) and senior Elizabeth Spokony  (Woodstown) placed fourth in the triple jump (11.24m) and sixth in the long jump (17’3.5”). Junior Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) placed sixth in the hammer (49.19m), ninth in the shot put (39’4.5”) and 17th in the discus (119’) and senior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) finished eighth in the 10,000m with a Rider record time 38:20.79. Also for the Rider men, freshman Adam Haun  (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) placed tenth in the long jump (21’10.75”). Sophomore Brian Leggett (Old Chatham, N.Y./Chatham) placed 14th in the pole vault with a personal best 14’1.25”.

At the Lonnie Barton Invitational in Savannah, Georgia Tuesday senior Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) shot a 75 after an opening round of 79 and finished 10th out of 53 golfers.  LeFante finished with a score of 154, 11 shots behind the leader.

Against St. Francis senior Danielle Morse  (Edison/Hopewell Valley) won at first singles 7-6, 6-2 with junior Kristina Paich  (Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional), freshman Tricia Ashmore  (Sparta) and freshman Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading) each winning 6-1, 6-0 at second, third and fourth singles. Junior Alyssa Markovits (Scotch Plains/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and freshman Katie Garrity  (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) posted straight set wins (6-0, 6-0) at fifth and sixth singles. Morse and Paich teamed up to win at first doubles 8-3, Ashmore and Garrity won at second doubles (8-3) with White and sophomore Amanda Matticks (Sewell/Washington Township) posting an 8-0 win at third doubles.
