LAWRENCEVILLE-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to Marist Saturday. "We made too many mistakes," said Rider head coach Barry Davis, "and we're not good enough right now to overcome them. We're not doing what good teams do."
In the first game Marist (15-20, 7-7 MAAC) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with three runs on two hits and a Rider error, and took an 8-0 lead in the third inning on three hits and two more Rider errors.
In the second game, Marist scored three runs in the seventh inning on one hit, two walks, a hit batsman and another Rider error to take a 4-3 lead.
It marked the eighth time this season that the Broncs out-hit their opponent (9-7) in a loss. "If we get any kind of clutch hits after the first inning we probably win the second game," Davis said.
Rider (12-26, 7-8 MAAC) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) singled, junior Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) hit an RBI double and sophomore Jerry Mulderig (Langhorne, PA/Council Rock South) hit an RBI single.
Crescenzo had two of Rider's nine hits in the second game and had three hits on the day.
The Broncs made it 3-0 in the fifth inning with a run on two hits, a sacrifice bunt, an error and a passed ball.
Marist got on the board in the sixth inning with a run on two hits and a Rider error.
Rider freshman pitcher Kurt Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing three runs. "Kurt threw fine," Davis said.
The Broncs were playing without their injured centerfielder, senior Brandon Cotten (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley), who injured his foot on Friday. Cotten leads Rider in hits and runs scored and saw his streak of 56 consecutive games played snapped.
In the MAAC the Broncs have series' left with Saint Peter's, Siena and Iona. "We've put ourselves in the situation now where we have to win all three series to make the playoffs," Davis said.
Rider travels to Saint Joseph's Tuesday for a 3pm game and hosts Princeton Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
