LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs went 2-0 over the weekend with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Iona Sunday afternoon. “It was a productive weekend,” said Rider head coach Chris Feliciano. “We’re continuing to grow as a group.”
Rider won 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 to reach the .500 mark for the first time since September 2. “It feels good to be back to .500,” Feliciano said. “Still a lot of work to be done but you couldn’t tell by the way we’ve been playing that we were a below .500 team.”
The second set was tied at 15-15 before the Broncs went on a 10-2 run.
Rider (11-11, 5-5 MAAC) was led by the play of sophomore Hailey Riede (Haworth/Northern Valley-Demarest), senior Ryan Ackermann (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge)and junior Veronica Koval (Allentown, PA/Parkland).
“Hailey and Veronica had great matches,” Feliciano said.
Riede compiled 16 kills and had a .469 hitting percentage. Ackermann had 12 kills, six digs and five assists. Koval had 35 assists and 11 digs. “Veronica created a ton of one-on-one situations while Hailey took advantage of them,” Feliciano said.
Junior Emma Aldaya (Prospect Park, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) contributed 19 digs and five assists.
Rider and Iona split their two meetings last year, as they also did in 2014.
Iona (4-18, 2-7 MAAC) leads the all-time series 27-7. “That shows the growth of the program,” Feliciano said. “The last three times they came to our gym we beat them. We like winning at home, especially against a good team like Iona.”
Rider is home again next weekend, hosting Canisius on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday. “We want to not just be at .500 but to get over and stay over,” Feliciano said. “We are a good group and we want to work to be and stay above that mark.”
