Rider at Mid-Atlantic Regional
STATE COLLEGE, PA—The Broncs competed at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday, hosted by Penn State.
For the Rider women, senior Megan McGarrity (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil’s Academy) placed 21st of 198 runners, covering the 6,000 meter Blue and White Course in 21:11, a new Rider record for this course.
“Meg had to run a great race to get All-Region and she did,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “Every time she has raced this year she has lived up to her potential. Today she ran above what she has been doing. It was a tremendous race by her.”
“I love this course,” said McGarrity, who as a top 25 finisher earned All-Region honors. “That was one of the goals, to earn All-Region. I knew if I had a good day it was within reach, but it was difficult.”
McGarrity ran 1:41 faster than last year. “The last time we were here it was snowing and freezing but it was beautiful today,” McGarrity said. “The training this year was a lot different, so that had as much to do with the better time as did the conditions. That and I was able to stay healthy this year.”
For the Rider men, who placed 18th, junior Danniel Belay (Gaithersburg, MD) was 76th of 155 runners, covering the 10,000 meter Blue and White Course in 32:18, cutting 31 seconds off of his time of last year when he placed 88th. “That was great,” Hamer said. “He did a much better job today and I was pleased with that. If he keeps doing that we’ll make some progress.”
Junior Mike Pinnola (Manalapan, NJ/Colts Neck) was 92nd in 32:42, senior Brad Kaufmann (East Meadow, NY) was 96th in 32:46, senior Connor Szwetkowski (Middletown, DE/Caravel Academy) was 106th in 32:12, freshman Isaiah Jean-Baptiste (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) was 115th in 33:27, sophomore Connor Riley (Madison, NJ) was 130th in 34:27 and junior David Paduani (Egg Harbor, NJ) was 132nd in 34:32.
“The guys ran really well today,” Hamer said. “We ran great through four and a half miles. I was proud of the effort. We struggled early on this year but they started working really hard and they did a great job today.”
Also for the Rider women, junior Rae Santora (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) placed 155th in 23:44. Sophomore Katie Chinery (Whiting, NJ/Manchester Twp.) was 162nd in 23:57 and sophomore Gabriella Vassalotti (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was 193rd in 26:16.
The Broncs compete at the IC4A/ECAC Championships November 19 at Van Cortlandt State Park. “That race is 5,000 meters so I’m excited to run it, since it is shorter,” McGarrity said. “I’m just going out with the same mindset and try to have fun.”
“We’re just looking for a solid performance,” Hamer said.
