Women earn win at Monmouth Season Opener, Men finish second
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Rider University women’s indoor track & field team defeated three-time defending MAAC Champion Monmouth, 68-56, in the Monmouth Season Opener Thursday night at the OceanFirst Bank Center. The Broncs’ men’s team also battled the Hawks, but fell, 66-52. Saint Peter’s rounded out the hOURglass rivalry field, scoring 11 points on the men’s side and one on the women’s side.
“It was a big win for the women tonight,” said Rider Head Coach Bob Hamer. “Monmouth has won every MAAC track & field championship since they joined the MAAC and to beat them definitely gives the team a lot of confidence moving forward. We had a lot of freshmen and newcomers really step up today, which is great to see. Monmouth will definitely improve throughout the season and we need to continue to improve as well.”
Victoria Brewer (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) won the one mile run in a time of 5:34.62 for the Broncs, while Natalie Cowan (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton), Daria Chadwick (Summit, NJ/Summit) and Quinn Bithell (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) swept the top three scoring positions in the high jump. Cowan cleared 1.73 meters, edging Chadwick, who cleared 1.70 meters. Bithell came in next, clearing 1.62 meters.
Tierra Taylor (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) won the 60-meter dash in 7.95 seconds, ahead of teammate Cheyenne Churchville (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), who finished in 8.14 seconds. Taylor also scored three points with a second-place finish in the 300 meter dash, finishing in 41.87 seconds.
The Broncs took the top two positions in the 60 meter hurdles, as Sara Gardner (Holland Township, NJ/Delaware Valley [Mount St. Mary’s]) won the race in 8.86 seconds and Chadwick finished second in 9.02 seconds.
Freshman Asia Young (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) broke the Rider record in the long jump at 5.88 meters in her first competition as a Bronc. The Broncs swept all 11 points in the event as Lindsay Bauer (Allentown, PA/Salisbury), Jennifer Maurer (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) and Brianna Best (Bellmore, MD/Kenwood) took the second, third and fourth scoring positions.
The Broncs also won the top spot in the triple jump and the shot put. Destiny Kearney (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) won the triple jump at 11.77 meters, while Ronetta Hunter (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) won the shot put in her first meet with the Broncs at 13.70 meters. Hunter missed all of last season while recovering from an injury.
The Rider men posted were led by first-place finishes by Erik Adamcik (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) in the pole vault, Michael Horn (Plainfield, NJ/Saint Joseph HS (Metuchen)) in the triple jump, Devon Jefferson (Franklin Park, NJ/Franklin) in the 60 meter hurdles and Arthur Johnson (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham/Notre Dame (OH)) in the 300 meter dash.
Adamcik won the pole vault at a Rider record of 4.95 meters, good for an IC4A qualifier. Horn took the triple jump at 14.54 meters. Jefferson’s 8.34 second time in the 60 meter hurdles bested the field, while Johnson’s 35.53 seconds in the 300 meter dash was also the best time of the meet.
“The men competed tough tonight in many areas but came up a bit short,” said Hamer. “We have the personnel to be competitive but we left some points out there today. We will work to improve so we can cut the gap to Monmouth.”
The Broncs return to action Dec. 11 at the Princeton New Year’s Invite. The event begins at 10:30 a.m.
