Rider moves to 6-2 with road win at Lehigh
BETHLEHEM, PA – Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic [Saint Francis Univ.]) scored a game-high 19 points and made five steals as the Rider University women’s basketball team defeated Lehigh, 75-68, Thursday night at Stabler Arena. The Broncs (6-2) did much of their damage in the paint, outscoring the Mountain Hawks (5-5), 50-22, in the lane.
Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, shooting 6-of-9 for the game. Johnnah Johnson (Blackwood, NJ/The Hun School [Robert Morris]) also scored eight of her 10 points in the final 20 minutes. Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) chipped in with nine points, while Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) contributed seven points and four assists. Yeliz Dogan (Izmir, Turkey/Antalya Koleji) grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
Quinci Mann led Lehigh with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Cameryn Benz added 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals, while Hannah Hedstrom also finished in double figures with 10 points to go along with a team-high four assists.
"This was a really hard-fought road win," said Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan. "I'm very proud of our resiliency and how we back each other up throughout the game. We had some different and new combinations in based on foul trouble and everyone did their part."
The Broncs immediately jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the early going, as Perkins knocked down three field goals for seven points in the stretch. Lehigh stormed back to take what proved to be its only lead of the game, 15-14, on a Taylor Campbell lay-up with 1:46 left in the quarter. But four points from Posset and a Dogan jumper gave Rider a 6-0 run to close the period and a 20-15 lead.
The run extended into the second quarter to 10-0 to give Rider a nine-point lead. The Broncs maintained a lead until Camryn Buhr hit a jumper with 1:18 to play in the half to tie the game at 35-35. But Dogan’s lay-up with seven seconds left sent Rider to the locker room with a 37-35 lead.
Perkins led all scorers with 15 points in the first half. She made five of her first six field-goal attempts and finished the half 6-for-10. Wentzel added six points, while Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City), Dogan and Posset contributed four points apiece. The Broncs outscored Lehigh, 26-10, in the paint. Benz led the Mountain Hawks with 10 points off the bench on 4-for-4 shooting and 2-for-2 from long range.
The Broncs started the second half on an 11-1 run to extend to a 48-36 lead. Hoskova started the run with a lay-up and finished it with a three-point play and another lay-up for seven points in the stretch. Eight-straight Lehigh points cut the Rider lead to four, before the Broncs scored the final four points of the third quarter to take a 54-46 lead after three.
Rider kept the Mountain Hawks at arm’s reach for the remainder of the game, maintaining a 4-9 point lead for the duration of the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
"We wanted to be better defensively but got the stops when we need to," said Milligan.
For the game, the Mountain Hawks narrowly outshot the Broncs, 46.42 percent (26-56) to 46.37 percent (32-69) from the floor, 36.0 percent (9-25) to 20.0 percent (3-15) from long range and 87.5 percent (7-8) to 80.0 percent (8-10) from the free-throw line. The Broncs took a 36-31 edge on the glass and a 50-22 advantage in points in the paint.
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Towson. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
