LAWRENCEVILLE, NJRobin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic [Saint Francis Univ.]) scored a career-high 33 points, including the 1,000th of her collegiate career, but the Rider University women’s basketball team’s comeback bid came up short in an 91-79 loss to defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 8-4 (2-1 MAAC), while the Bobcats improve to 10-3 (3-0 MAAC).

Lexi Posset
(Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) added a season-high 13 points, including 9-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line. Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) and Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) chipped in with eight points apiece, with Duggan grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.

Sarah Shewan led Quinnipiac with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Adily Martucci added 16 points, while Aryn McClure posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while also going for four assists and four steals.

“We played poorly in the second quarter and that cost us,” said Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan. “I thought we came out in the second half and bounced back really well. I thought we recovered from the second quarter, but that cost us a little bit in the fourth quarter. I thought we ran out of gas a little bit in those last couple minutes.”

A back-and-forth first quarter featured six ties, three lead changes and no leads of greater than three points. Wentzel’s driving lay-up at the buzzer tied the game at 23-23 after 10 minutes. The Broncs took a 29-26 lead on a pair of Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) free throws just over two minutes into the second quarter. But Quinnipiac responded with 21 of the next 23 points to open a double-digit lead. The advantage extended to 17 points on a pair of Paige Warfel free throws with 33 seconds left in the half. Perkins hit a transition three at the first-half buzzer to cut the deficit to 52-38 at the break.

Perkins led the Broncs with 16 points in the first half, while also grabbing four rebounds. The Broncs were plagued by 15 turnovers that resulted in a 17-8 discrepancy in points off turnovers. Shewan led Quinnipiac with 15 points and four rebounds, hitting all four of her field-goal attempts and all seven of her free-throw attempts. Martucci also added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Broncs took a 52.4 percent (11-21) to 50.0 percent (17-34) edge from the floor.

After Paula Strautmane started the second-half scoring with a bucket in the paint, Rider scored 16 of the next 20 points to close to within four. Perkins scored the first 11 points in the spurt, including three three-pointers. The Broncs scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the Bobcats’ lead to 63-62 after three quarters.

The Bobcats scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, before the Broncs cut the deficit to two on three occasions, but could draw no closer. The Bobcats pushed their lead to as many as 13 points before taking the 91-79 victory.

“Like I told the kids in the locker room, if Rider women’s basketball is that first quarter, that third quarter and that fourth quarter, then I’m all in and we’ll be ready for the rest of the MAAC,” said Milligan.

For the game, the Bobcats outshot the Broncs, 53.4 percent (31-58) to 50.0 percent (23-46) from the floor and 77.4 percent (24-31) to 70.0 percent (28-40) from the free-throw line. The Broncs took a slight 41.7 percent (5-12) to 38.5 percent (5-13) edge from long range. Quinnipiac outrebounded Rider, 32-25, and took a 58-18 edge in bench scoring.

The Broncs return to action Monday, when they play host to Iona. Tipoff from Alumni Gym is slated for 7 p.m.
