ALBANY, NYKahlil Thomas (Parkway, FL/Blanche Ely) had 20 points and nine rebounds and Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) compiled his first-career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists, but the Rider University men’s basketball team fell at Siena, 78-68, Tuesday night at the Times Union Center. The Saints (8-11, 5-3 MAAC) scored 23 of the first 27 points in the second half to push past the Broncs (11-8, 4-4 MAAC).

Jimmie Taylor (Branford, FL/Suwannee) scored 12 points and added six rebounds, while Norville Carey (British Virgin Islands/Red Lion Christian [Southern Miss]) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lavon Long led Siena with 29 points and 12 rebounds. However, Taylor switched onto Long defensively and held him without a field goal for the final 19 minutes of play. He still figured in the scoring eight points on 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Javion Ogunyemi and Marquis Wright contributed 12 points and five rebounds apiece, while Brett Bisping finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Broncs opened the game on an 11-2 run with four points apiece from Carey and Jordan, a Taylor three and a Thomas bucket in the post. The Rider lead grew to 11 points, 18-7, before Siena methodically outscored the Broncs, 21-9, over the next seven minutes to take its first lead of the game, 28-27. Rider quickly countered with a 7-0 run on buckets from Thomas and Jordan and a Xavier Lundy (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) three-pointer to retake a 34-28 advantage. The Broncs took a 45-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Thomas led the Broncs with 15 points and five rebounds at the half, while Jordan added nine points and six assists. Taylor also added eight points and four rebounds. Long paced Siena with 16 points and six rebounds, while Wright added eight points. Both teams shot the ball well, with Siena taking a 53.6 percent (15-28) to 48.6 percent (17-35) edge. The Broncs made 71.4 percent (5-7) from long range, while the Saints (62.5 percent, 5-8) misfired on one more attempt.

Long scored the second half’s first five points and Bisping added a triple for an 8-0 run and a 48-45 Siena lead. Rider retook the lead on buckets from Thomas and Carey, but Siena effectively put the game away with another 15-0 run, giving the Saints a 63-49 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. Two Bisping threes and another from Wright did much of the damage. The Broncs were whistled for nine of the first 13 fouls in the second half and 18 of the first 26 in the game and Siena finished the game 11 of its final 15 points coming from the free-throw line in the last eight minutes. The Saints made 17-of-21 from the line in the second half to the Broncs’ 4-of-8.

The Broncs cut the deficit to seven on a Jordan drive at the 2:24 mark, but chaos ensued on the next Siena trip down court. Carey was whistled for a common foul, before officials had to separate the two teams. Wright and Anthony Durham (Philadelphia, PA/Abington/Putnam Science) were ejected, Siena’s Khalil Richard and Head Coach Jimmy Patsos, as well as Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett and Jordan were assessed technical fouls. The Broncs would get no closer than to within seven the rest of the way.

For the game, Siena outshot the Broncs, 50.0 percent (23-46) to 38.2 percent (26-68) from the floor, 52.6 percent (10-19) to 33.3 percent (6-18) from long range and 78.6 percent (22-28) to 66.7 percent (10-15) from the free-throw line. The Saints also took a 37-35 edge on the boards. Rider outscored Siena, 36-26, in the paint.

The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they play host to Marist. Tip-off from Alumni Gym is slated for 7 p.m.
