JERSEY CITY, NJ – Senior Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic [Saint Francis Univ.]) scored a game-high 24 points to go along with five rebounds to lead the Rider University women’s basketball team past Saint Peter’s, 56-43, on Thursday evening in MAAC play at the Yanitelli Center. The Broncs (13-5, 7-2 MAAC) remained perfect on the road in league play in 2016-17, while the Peacocks (3-15, 2-7 MAAC) saw their two-game home winning streak come to an end.

“I thought we bounced back pretty well,” Rider University Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “In the second quarter we did a much better job rebounding and that led to better offense. Rebounding kept us in flow and we were able to get good looks. I thought our defensive intensity was good, we forced multiple shot-clock violations and did a good job with switches to keep their players out of their comfort areas.”

Perkins knocked down 8-of-19 shots from the field and hit 5-of-7 from the free-throw line to pace the Bronc attack. Classmate Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) scored in double figures for the seventh straight game, pouring in 10 points and pulling down five boards. Freshman guard Safie Tolusso (Vevey, Switzerland/Honore d'Estinne d'Orves) provided a spark off the bench for Rider, scoring eight points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Tolusso hit all four of her shots from the field.

It was a record-setting day for Milligan as she picked up her 100th career win at the helm of the program. In a program that dates back to 1925, she became just the second coach in school history to reach the milestone and she is second in women’s basketball history in all-time wins.

Junior guard Talah Hughes was the lone Peacock in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting. Freshman guard Brianna Tarabocchia chipped in eight points for Saint Peter’s thanks to hitting a pair of shots from three-point range.

It was a defensive battle early as the two teams combined for just six points over the first six minutes of action. After scoring on their first possession, the Broncs missed their next eight shots before a lay-up from Duggan tied the game at four coming out of the first quarter media timeout.

The Rider defense held the Peacocks scoreless on their first five possessions of the game before an offensive rebound led to a Saint Peter’s lay-up to tie it at two.

The guests ended the first strong, using a 5-0 run to lead, 12-11 after 10 minutes of play. During the spurt, Rider held Saint Peter’s without a field goal for over two minutes and got a three-pointer from Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) and a basket from Duggan in the paint.

To start the second, Rider forced turnovers on four of the first five Peacock possessions. The Broncs also used screens and penetration to get Saint Peter’s into foul trouble. Three and a half minutes into the frame, the guests were already in the bonus.  Eight unanswered points from Perkins, three of which came at the charity stripe, gave the visitors a 23-14 advantage with four minutes left in the half.

Rider closed the opening half strong, allowing just one field, a three-pointer, over the final seven and a half minutes of play. The Broncs outscored the hosts, 18-6, in the second quarter to take a 30-17 lead into halftime. In the opening half, Rider forced 15 Peacock turnovers and held the hosts to just 25 percent (6-24) shooting.

Perkins scored the first eight Bronc points of the third quarter and a Duggan lay-up with 6:43 left in the frame gave Rider a 40-19 advantage. The Peacocks would answer with a 5-0 run, knocking down three shots from the foul line to cut the deficit to 16 at 40-24 heading into the third quarter media timeout. The Rider defense would once again clamp down, holding Saint Peter’s without a point over the final five minutes of the frame to take a 41-24 lead into the fourth.

Early in the fourth quarter, senior forward Yeliz Dogan (Izmir, Turkey/Antalya Koleji) scored four points thanks to a pair of nice post moves and entry passes for the Broncs. Following a long two-point jumper from Tolusso in transition Rider held a 50-31 edge.

For the game, Rider shot over 41 percent (22-53) from the field and held Saint Peter’s to just under 29 percent (15-52). The Broncs forced 21 Peacock turnovers and 11 assists on 22 made field goals.

The win was the third straight for the Broncs against Saint Peter’s. Rider is now 12-1 this season when leading at halftime and 12-3 when holding the opposition under 50 percent shooting.

The Broncs return to action on Saturday, January 21, with a road MAAC contest against first-place Quinnipiac that is slated to get underway at 2:00 pm at the TD Bank Sports Center.
