Saint Peter's comes back to down Broncs, 56-51
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Jimmie Taylor (Branford, FL/Suwannee) led four Broncs in double figures with 13 points, but the Rider University men’s basketball team was defeated by Saint Peter’s, 56-51, Monday night at the Yanitelli Center. With the loss, the Broncs dip to 12-9 (5-5 MAAC), while the Peacocks improve to 11-9 (7-3 MAAC).
Xavier Lundy (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) added 12 points, while Kahlil Thomas (Parkway, FL/Blanche Ely) and Norville Carey (British Virgin Islands/Red Lion Christian [Southern Miss]) had 11 points apiece. Carey completed his fourth double-double of the year with 10 rebounds, while also blocking three shots.
Cavon Baker scored all of his game-high 16 points in the final 13:06 after he was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer. He connected on all three free throws at the time and all five of his attempts in the second half, while also hitting three pivotal three-pointers. His putback of his own miss with 43 seconds left proved to be a back breaker. Nick Griffin hit 4-of-6 three-point attempts for 12 points, while Quadir Welton added nine points and six rebounds.
“We just didn’t execute,” said Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett. “Too many turnovers. We didn’t play smart down the stretch. We didn’t play smart from the 15-minute mark on down.”
The Broncs scored the game’s first six points, including four from Carey to establish an early lead. Three-straight Griffin three-pointers gave the Peacocks their only lead of the first half, 9-8, with just over 15 minutes to play in the first. But an 11-2 Rider run reestablished a 19-11 lead. Taylor scored five points in the run, while Thomas contributed four.
The Peacocks scored the next four points to cut the Broncs’ lead to 19-15, but Lundy connected on a three and Thomas hit a jumper to push the lead back to nine. The lead fluctuated between six and nine points the rest of the half with Rider taking a 32-23 lead into the break.
Lundy led the Broncs with nine points, while Carey added eight points, four rebounds and two blocks in the first half. Thomas added six points on 3-of-4 from the floor, while Taylor chipped in with five points. The Broncs outshot the Peacocks, 53.6 percent (15-28) to 30.8 percent (8-26) in the period. Griffin led the Peacocks with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from long range.
Rider built the lead to 14 points on a pair of occasions early in the second half on the strength of five points from Thomas. But Baker was fouled shooting a three and made all three free throws to spark a 15-2 run to cut the Rider lead to 43-42. Baker scored nine points in the run, including consecutive threes.
Following a fast-break lay-up from Taylor, Welton got inside for two and Baker hit his third three of the half to give Saint Peter’s just its second lead of the game and its first since just under the 15-minute mark of the first half. A Griffin three with just over three minutes left pushed the Saint Peter’s lead to five and the Peacocks wouldn’t relinquish the advantage.
Rider cut the deficit to 50-48 on a pair of Taylor free throws with 1:12 left, but could draw no closer.
“There’s a lot of season left,” said Baggett. “We can’t give games away when you’re playing as well as we were playing. We’re not closing games out the right way now. We’re not playing as well in the second half as we are in the first half.”
For the game, the Broncs outshot the Peacocks, 42.0 percent (21-50) to 32.7 percent (17-52) from the floor. The Peacocks took a 36.8 percent (7-19) to 33.3 percent (4-12) edge from long range and outshot the Broncs, 71.4 percent (15-21) to 33.3 percent (5-15) from the free-throw line. Rider took a 38-34 advantage on the glass. The Peacocks’ bench outscored that of Rider, 27-2.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, when they begin the MAAC’s Western New York road trip at Niagara. Tip-off from the “Taps” Gallagher Center is slated for 3 p.m.
