Boston, MA – The Rider University track and field team competed in the opening day of the 2017 BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. On the first day of the two-day event, the women took part in both track and field events, while the only race on the men’s side was the distance medley relay.

“We had some moments today that were very good, including a strong close to the day with the distance runners,” Rider Head Coach Bob Hamer said. “We are looking forward to carrying this momentum into tomorrow.  We come here to get qualifiers, records, and PRs and we are looking for that to continue into Saturday.”

In the long jump, freshman Asia Young (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) had a solid day for the Broncs. She finished second in her opening flight and took third overall in the finals with a leap of 5.64M (18-06.00). As the season has progressed, Young has been getting stronger each meet.

Junior Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro HS South) continued her strong campaign in the weight throw. She finished third in the event and set a new personal best with an ECAC-qualifying toss of 17.17M (56-04.00).

Senior distance runner Megan McGarrity (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil's Academy) set a new school record in the 5K with an ECAC-qualifying time of 17:02.64.

“McGarrity ran a fantastic race today,” Hamer added. “She really went for it and battled.  Sometimes we need to find out where our limits are and tonight we found out some things that we can use to help Meg moving forward. She is a tough kid who showed that tonight.”

To close out the day, the Bronc distance medley relay quartet of Isaiah Jean-Baptiste (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill HS East), Brian Calderaro (Massapequa, NY/Univ. of Hartford/John F. Kennedy), Anthony Ardino (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and Sam Knipper (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) finished third with an IC4-qualifying time of 10:05.95.

“The relays are a good place for us to give some athletes opportunities to shine and gain some confidence,” Hamer noted. “We definitely were able to accomplish that tonight.”

The Broncs close out action at the 2017 BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday, January 28, with the men competing in all track and field events, while the women’s distance medley will also take place.
