Lawrenceville, NJ – Junior Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) and senior Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) both recorded double-doubles as the Rider University women’s basketball team defeated hOURglass rival Monmouth, 75-63, on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs (21-6, 15-3 MAAC) stretched their conference winning streak to a MAAC-best eight games and completed the season sweep of the Hawks (12-15, 7-11 MAAC).

“I’m pleased with tonight’s win,” Rider University Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “We played a solid game on both ends of the floor and our overall play as a team was solid with different players stepping up again to propel us to victory. Monmouth is a very dangerous team they shoot the ball well, pressure the entire game and I think we kept our composure and our balance which really helped us.”

Duggan’s double-double was her team-leading eighth of the season, while Hoskova picked up her second straight double-double. Duggan had 18 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, while Hoskova knocked down 7-of-14 from the field for 18 points to go along with 10 boards and three steals. Sophomore guard Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) was the other Bronc in double figures with 14 points thanks to shooting 4-of-4 from deep. Over her last two games, Posset has knocked down 9-of-14 from three-point range.

It was a balanced attack for Monmouth as three different Hawks scored in double figures. Both McKinzee Barker and freshman Kayla Shaw poured in 13 points apiece. The duo combined to hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Guard Rosa Graham was the other Monmouth player in double figures with 10, while Tyese Purvis added nine points.

Rider started the contest on a 6-0 run over the first two minutes of play as all the Bronc points came in the paint. Monmouth would come charging back to take a 12-10 edge following a mid-range jumper from Purvis. The Broncs would later use an 8-0 run to take a 22-14 advantage after a three from the corner by Hoskova. Rider would score nine of the 11 points of the quarter to lead 25-16 after 10 minutes.

During the first quarter, Rider forced five turnovers and knocked down an impressive 66 percent (10-15) of its shots from the field. Playing without leading scorer Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic/Saint Francis Univ) for the third straight game, it was a balanced attack early for the Broncs with seven different players scoring.

Rider continued to get to the basket and break the Monmouth press at will with a lay-up in transition by Hoskova to give the Broncs a 32-24 lead with under seven to play in the opening half. Following that basket, Monmouth would hold the Broncs without a field goal for over three minutes to pull within four. The Hawks would hang around and pull within two at 36-34 courtesy of free throw from Christina Mitchell.

Rider would get the final points of the half as senior forward Yeliz Dogan (Izmir, Turkey/Western Nebraska CC/Antalya Koleji) hit a left-handed floater in the lane to give the Broncs a 38-34 advantage heading into the break. The Broncs forced eight Hawk turnovers in the first half and shot over 42 percent (15-35) from the field. Monmouth kept the game close over the first 20 minutes thanks to knock down 5-of-12 from three-point range.

Rider opened the second half on a 9-0 run behind two baskets in the paint by Hoskova, one by Duggan and a three-pointer from Posset to stretch their lead to 13 at 47-34. Monmouth would cut the deficit to single digits at 49-41 with five minutes left in the frame following a drive and bucket from Graham.

After the Hawks pulled to within five at 51-46 following a lay-up from Shaw, Rider would answer as freshman guard Safie Tolusso (Vevey, Switzerland/Honore d'Estinne d'Orves) and senior guard Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) would hit threes on back-to-back possessions to stretch the lead back to double digits at 57-46. The Broncs would make it an 8-0 run to close out the third as Duggan’s tip-in capped the scoring in the frame to give the hosts a 59-46 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The third quarter continues to be the turning point for Rider this season, as the Broncs outscored Monmouth, 21-12, to turn a two-possession game into a double digit lead. This year, the Broncs are outscoring their conference opponents by 58 points coming out of halftime. In the third, Rider forced four turnovers, had 12 points in the paint and hit a trio of three-pointers.

Monmouth started the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to pull within four at 61-57. During the spurt, the guests hit a pair of three-pointers and forced two Rider turnovers. Wentzel would spell the run with a basket to make it a six-point contest. After a stop, Hoskova would score in the paint to push the Rider lead to eight with under four and a half remaining.

Rider pushed its lead back to double digits at 68-58 courtesy of a trey from the wing by Posset with 2:30 left in the contest. After a Monmouth three, the Broncs answered as Posset hit a three from the wing with the shot clock winding down. She made it eight straight points for Rider with a pair of free throws with 35.7 left to give Rider a 12-point lead.

For the game, Rider shot over 40 percent (29-71) from the field, while Monmouth hit 36 percent (22-61) of their shots. Rider forced 16 turnovers and outscored the Hawks, 38-26, in the paint.

The Broncs return to action on Friday, February 24, with a home conference showdown against Niagara that is slated to begin at 7:00 pm. Rider is looking to sweep the season series versus the Purple Eagles after topping Niagara, 78-58, in early December. Prior to the contest, Rider will also honor the four members of the senior class for their contributions to the program.
