BUIES CREEK, NC – The Rider University baseball team fell to host Campbell University, 7-5, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium. The Broncs (5-7) suffered their second road loss in a row, while the Camels (7-9) have won two of their last three at home.

Trailing, 7-0, in the eighth, Rider would not go down without a fight. The Broncs plated three runs in the frame and loaded the bases with two outs before Campbell reliever, Wyatt Tyson, got out of the jam. In the eighth inning, pinch hitter Dallas Clark (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) walked with the bases loaded and junior infielder Jake Bender (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) delivered a two-run single to left for the guests.

After a scoreless bottom half of the frame, Rider cut the deficit to just two runs at 7-5 in the top of the ninth courtesy of a two-run home run to left field by senior Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert Hall) with two outs. The Camels would retire the batter following Lipinski’s homer to escape with the win.

Campbell broke the game open with five runs in the second stanza. In the inning, the Camels had just two hits and took advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch. All the damage in the second came with two outs. The hosts added single insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Offensively, Harrison McClure (Atlanta, GA/South Florida State/North Atlanta), Riley Mihalik (Churchville, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) and Bender all had multi-hit games for Rider. Lipinski and Bender both had two RBIs apiece for the Broncs as well. Lipinski now has a team-high eight RBIs on the season.

On the mound, freshman John Yocum (Easton, PA/Freedom) was saddled with the loss for the Broncs. Yocum, who is now 0-2 on the spring, worked 5.2 innings and allowed all seven Camel runs, while surrendering six hits and walking six Campbell batters. The up-and-down start also saw the first-year hurler strike out a career-high seven hitters.

“Once again, we had too many walks,” Rider Head Coach Barry Davis said. “We walked eight guys today and most of them came around to score. We have to prevent the big inning and we left some opportunities out there early.”

“We swung the ball well,” Davis added. “Our bullpen was solid and gave us a chance. It was a nice rally, but too much to overcome.”

- Rider advanced runners into scoring position in three of the first four innings, but was unable to score.
- Riley Mihalik reached base four times in the game, smacking two hits to go along with a pair of walks.
- McClure’s multi-hit game was his third in his last five games.
- Dallas Clark walked with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. The RBI was his first of the season and the sixth of his career.
- Bender’s two-run single in the eighth gave him his first multi-hit game of the season.
- Jordan Silverman tossed 1.1 innings of no-hit, scoreless relief. On the season, Silverman has worked six innings without allowing an earned run. In his last three appearances, Silverman has now allowed a hit and has fanned five hitters in 4.1 innings.
- Rider outhit Campbell, 10-6. It marked the third time in the last four games that the Broncs registered 10 or more hits.

- Prior to the game, Kyle Johnson was named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week. Also, junior lefty Nick Margevicius was tabbed as the MAAC Pitcher of the Week.
- Kaiser’s double was his second of the season and his second in the last three games.
- After an impressive opening start, Yocum has lost back-to-back games on the bump. Entering the contest, Yocum had six strikeouts in his first two starts. Today he struck out seven.

Rider wraps up a two-game series with Campbell on Wednesday, March 15, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 pm.
