NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Rider University baseball team opened a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekend series against Iona with a 7-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at City Park. The Broncs (8-14, 1-3 MAAC) dropped their third straight conference clash, while the Gaels (8-10, 2-2 MAAC) have now won three of their last four contests.

Iona broke open up a 2-2 tie in the home half of the seventh with a five-run outburst. After Rider retired the leadoff hitter in the frame, the Gaels reeled off five consecutive hits to take a lead they would not surrender.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Rider junior first basemen Jake Bender ( Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) delivered a one-out, two-run single to right center to knot the game at two. The tie was short lived as the hosts answered in the bottom half of the frame.

Offensively, senior outfielder Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) led the charge for the Broncs, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kaiser produced two of the team’s six hits on the day. Bender had a timely knock for Rider, smacking his two-run single in the seventh.

On the mound, junior southpaw Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, OH/Saint Ignatius) was saddled with the loss for Rider. Margevicius, who is now 2-1 on the spring, tossed 6.1 innings and surrendered five earned runs, while fanning five Gaels.

NOTES & QUOTES
“It’s difficult to win when you only score two runs,” Rider Head Coach Barry Davis said. “We hit the ball hard at times with little success. We have to avoid the big inning and we didn’t today. We gave up five runs in the seventh after getting the leadoff guy out. Our backs are against the wall now. We have to find a way to fight through this.”

- Kaiser now has back-to-back multi-hit games for the Broncs. He has five games with two or more hits on the season.
- Bender’s multi-RBI game was his fourth of the season.
- It marked the first start this season that Margevicius allowed more than three earned runs.
- In relief, Josh Sharik tossed 1.2 innings and allowed two earned runs. He also fanned three hitters and surrendered three hits.

ON DECK
Rider and Iona conclude their weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 2, that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. The first tilt tomorrow will be a seven-inning contest and the finale will be nine innings.
