LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University baseball team fell to visiting Wagner, 14-7, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field. The Broncs (13-16) saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, while the Seahawks (8-17) won their second game in a row versus a MAAC opponent after topping Saint Peter’s on Tuesday.

The back-and-forth contest saw the guests pull away, scoring 10 unanswered runs from the fourth innings through the eighth. Wagner put the contest out of reach with a five-run outburst in the top of the eighth inning. The Seahawks took advantage of two Bronc errors in the frame to back around the order. All five of the Wagner runs in the eighth were unearned.

Offensively, Rider was led by sophomore designated hitter Riley Mihalik (Churchville, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy), who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a solo home run. Senior Mike Volaski (Oxnard, CA/Ventura CC/Oxnard) had a solid day at the plate for Rider, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Both of his RBIs came on a two-out double in the first.

On the mound, Rider junior Paul Sparano (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) was saddled with the loss out of the bullpen. Sparano worked two innings and allowed two runs, just one of which was earned, while scattering three hits and striking out one hitter.

“We played about as bad as you can play,” Rider Head Coach Barry Davis said. “Nothing positive came out of today. It’s disappointing, especially with the important games this weekend.”

- Rider is now 15-5 against Wagner all-time.
- On Monday, Richie Tecco was named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week. A day later, the conference office honored Lee Lipinski as the MAAC Player of the Week and John Yocum as the MAAC Rookie of the Week.
- In the first start of his career, Rider sophomore Anthony Arneth tossed 2.0 innings and scattered four hits, while allowing four runs, three of which were earned. He struck out one hitter and walked one as well.
- Mihalik accounted for three of Rider’s seven hits on the day. His solo shot in the bottom of the ninth was his team-leading fourth of the season. He tied a career-high with his three RBIs, it was the third time in his career he has recorded three RBIs in a game. It also marked the fifth time in 2017 he has had two or more RBIs.
- Relievers Dylan Simcik, who worked a perfect ninth inning, and Josh Sharik, who tossed .1 innings, were the only Rider pitchers that did not allow a run on the day. The six Bronc errors led to eight unearned runs.
- Rider left the bases loaded in both the seventh and ninth innings.

- Rider tied a season-high with four stolen bases in the game. It also marked the third straight contest in which the Broncs have stolen at least four bases.
- Volaski is now second on the team with 19 RBIs. Tyler Kaiser has a team-high 22 RBIs this spring. On Wednesday, Kaiser stole two bases. He is now 8-of-9 on attempted steals in 2017.
- The six errors were a season-high for the Broncs.
- Rider tied a season-high with 11 runners left on base.

Rider closes out a four-game homestand with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series on Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15. The series gets underway with a single, nine-inning game on Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday that is set to begin at noon.
