Loyola defeats Broncs, 6-1
LUTHERVILLE, MD – Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) won at No. 3 singles, but the Rider University women’s tennis team fell at Loyola, 6-1, Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 7-11, while the Greyhounds improve to 8-8.
Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) and Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, IN/Fishers) earned a 6-4 win over Alexandria Agee and Lin Robertson at No. 2 doubles. However, the Broncs were edged in the remaining two doubles matches as the Greyhounds took the point. Canda and Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) took a 6-4 setback to Amanda Lanciano and Ania Krawiec at No. 1.
Canda earned a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Agee at No. 3 singles. However, the Greyhounds took the remaining five singles flights to clinch the match. The Broncs pushed the Greyhounds to set tie-breakers at a pair of flights, with Binder falling to Julie Clark, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 5 and Melendez taking a 6-2, 7-6, setback at No. 1 to Lanciano.
“The women came very close to winning doubles and singles today,” said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. “Amanda’s tie-breaker was extremely close. If she won that set, she would’ve had more confidence going into the second. It was the closest we’ve been to beating Loyola in the three years that I’ve been here.”
The Broncs wrap up the season Thursday, when they play host to hOURglass rival Saint Peter’s at 3:30 p.m.
