LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University track and field team opened competition at both the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton and contested at Weaver Stadium and the Widener Invitational hosted by the Pride and contested at  Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Friday afternoon. On the first day of the two-day events, the Broncs saw strong performances in both the Garden State and the Keystone State.

At Widener, freshman Darius Marrow (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional) finished third in the discus throw with a toss of 43.78M.

At Princeton, junior thrower Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro HS South) finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 53.78M. Johnathan Jackson (Roselle, NJ/Magnet) ran a strong 800M race for the Broncs, finishing fifth amongst collegiate runners with a time of 1:50.38.

NOTES & QUOTES
“We had some really good highlights tonight on Day 1 of the Larry Ellis and Widener Invites,” Rider Head Coach Bob Hamer said. “Sandvig hit another hammer throw PR and ECAC qualifying mark with her throw of 53.78 meters.  She is having a really good outdoor season right now where she is improving every week.  That is something that is difficult to do week in and week out.”

“Jackson ran a very nice race to set a new PR and IC4A qualifying mark of 1:50.38,” Hamer added. “He executed the race plan perfectly.  He just needs to work on the last 50 meters.  If he can get a little bit of snap over the last 50 then he will be ready to break that 1:50 barrier.”

Katie Chinery and Gabby Vassalotti had nice breakthrough performances in the 5K at Widener,” Hamer noted. “Hopefully, this success will be a springboard for additional accomplishments this season.”

- On Tuesday, sophomore thrower Ashley Berry was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Field Performer of the Week. It marked the second time this year that she earned the honor.
- Sandvig’s hammer throw toss at Princeton was a new PR and was an ECAC-qualifier.
- Jackson’s time in the 800 was a new PR and an IC4A-qualifying time.
