Baseball

The Broncs swept UMES in a three-game series, and junior Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week.  Petrowski struck out seven in six innings to win the opener. Junior Sean Olson (Vineland, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) collected six hits and six RBI in the series while scoring six runs and junior Maurice Williams (Ocean, N.J./Monmouth Regional) added four hits, including a pair of doubles.

M. Basketball

Competing in their third Bracket Buster game, the Broncs defeated Cal State Northridge Saturday evening as part of the sixth annual O’Reilly ESPNU Bracket Busters, televised live on ESPNU. Sophomore Ryan Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) made a foul shot with six seconds left to give Rider the victory. R. Thompson finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Trailing 67-62 with 4:40 remaining, Cal State Northridge (18-7), currently in first place in the Big West (10-2), out-scored Rider 10-5 to tie the score at 72-72 with 28 seconds remaining.  Rider (19-9), currently tied for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (11-5), was led by junior Harris Mansell (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham), who made a career-high five three-pointers and finished with 21 points, tying his career high. Three times in the final six minutes Cal State Northridge cut the lead to two points, 62-60, 69-67 and 72-70. The first two times Mansell answered with a three-point field goal. Senior Jason Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) compiled 11 points and 13 rebounds. The 13 rebounds gives J. Thompson 330 for the year, breaking the single season record of 328 set in 1971-72 by Steve Jefferson. The ‘double-double’ was the 18th of the season for J. Thompson, the 35th in the last two seasons and the 48th of his career.  Thompson played just 14 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

At Virginia Tech sophomore Candice Harris (Las Vegas, Nev. (Coronado) collected five hits in the first four games, including a home run and a double. Senior Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif/Oaks Christian) homered to break a 3-3 tie in win over Robert Morris. Junior Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif) earned the pitching win, her eighth.

Wrestling

Against Sacred Heart senior 197 T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won by fall with junior 165 Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) winning a major decision. Heavyweight Ed Bordas (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) posted a double overtime win, sophomore 133 Thomas Lorenzo (West Orange) won in overtime and senior 149 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) also posted a victory. Also winning for the Broncs were freshman 125 Ilyass Elmasouri (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff),  freshman 141 Fred Rodgers (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown), sophomore 157 Rob Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and sophomore 174 Mike Darling (Moorestown). Against Boston U. T.J. Morrison collected his 100th career win, just the 12th Bronc to reach the century mark, as Rider won eight of the 10 bouts.

At the MAAC Championships junior Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won five gold medals and set three MAAC records, junior Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) won four gold medals, and they were both named the Most Outstanding Swimmers. Senior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) won the 3-meter and set a MAAC record in winning the 1-meter dive, and junior Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) set MAAC records in winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter and they were both named the MAAC Most Outstanding Divers. Sophomore Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex/Vernon Township) won four gold medals with two MAAC records, freshman Brianna Burns (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) won three gold medals and set a MAAC record in the 100 free, and sophomore Scott Player (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S Ayala) won two gold medals.

Rider senior Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) scored a career-high 27 points, 15 in the second half as the Broncs defeated Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic game Sunday afternoon. Playing all 40 minutes, Henderson added five assists and five rebounds. Trailing 49-48 with seven minutes left in the game, Rider (8-20, 3-14 MAAC) went on a 12-0 run, five points by Henderson to take a 60-49 lead with just under three minutes remaining. Also for the Broncs, sophomore Amanda Sepulveda (Perth Amboy/Hun) scored 16 points with six rebounds and went three for four at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.  Sepulveda also played all 40 minutes and went five for five from the field including a perfect three for three from three-point range.

At the MAAC Championships, junior Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) won the high jump (1.70m), placed third in the triple jump (10.99m) and third in the long jump (5.17m) to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors. Sophomore Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) won the weight throw (14.95m) and placed third in the shot put (11.67m). For the Rider men, sophomore Kevin Breen (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) placed second in the pole vault (4.50m). Junior Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) placed second in the triple jump (11.26m), third in the 55m hurdles (8.57), fifth in the long jump (5.07m) and seventh in the high jump (1.50m). Senior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) placed second in the pole vault (3.15m).
