PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-The Rider University women's tennis team lost the 2012 spring opener on Thursday afternoon at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.

For the Broncs, freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) took her second singles match to three sets before losing 10-4 in the tie-breaker.

"It was our first mach of the spring season and Philadelphia played a little steadier," said head coach Ed Torres.  "We had a few players higher in the lineup than normal and while they fought hard, as a team we were over matched."

Rider played without three starters who missed the match due to prior academic commitments and exams.

Also for Rider, junior Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) won nine games at first singles and freshman Samantha Troxell (Mays Landing/Buena) also won nine games at six singles.

The Rider men open their spring season Saturday at Rutgers Camden with the Bronc women back in action on Sunday at La Salle.

"With the full team together, I think we will fair a little better as the season goes along," Torres added.
