Rider Hosts Lehigh Wednesday
LAWRENCEVILLE--Fresh off a two-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference sweep of Manhattan College on Sunday, the Rider University softball team hosts Lehigh University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Herb and Joan Young Field beginning at 3pm.
Rider (11-18-1) is led by three-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week Rachael Matreale (Williamstown) who enters play needing only eight strikeouts to reach the 500 K plateau.
For the season, Matreale is 10-6 with a 2.29 earned run average and she has won 10 of 14 games with a 1.58 earned run average, recording 104 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings since the opening weekend of the season.
Her 6.5 strikeouts per seven innings is third in the MAAC (115th in the nation) and her 2.29 earned run average is third in the conference (and 126th nationally).
The offense continues to be paced by freshman Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) who leads the team with a .318 batting average.
Breeden has 17 RBI, eight runs scored and five doubles for the Broncs while starting all 30 games.
Lehigh is 19-13, 4-0 in the Patriot League and the Mountain Hawks are led Julie Fernandez (.429) and Jennifer Colquhoun (.413) who are each batting over .400.
Emily Bausher leads Lehigh in the circle with a 1.34 earned run average and a 9-7 record.
The Mountain Hawks have won six in a row and eight of nine games.
Rider has won four of its last five games and six of the last nine.
Rider and Lehigh last met on April 28, 2011 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with the Mountain Hawks winning the opener 6-0 and the Broncs taking the nightcap 8-4.
In 2009, the Mountain Hawks won 8-6 in eight innings and 13-6 in Lawrenceville. Rider has won 32 of the 46 games all-time against Lehigh with the Mountain Hawks winning 11 of the last 20 meetings since 2001.
