Women's College Tennis
Lafayette College 6, Rider University 1
EASTON, Pa.--It was a test that the freshman passed with flying colors.
Taking advantage of two players missing the match due to midterm exams, freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won for the fifth time this season, scoring a 3-6, 7-5, 10-2 decision over the number one singles player from Lafayette who trains in Naples, Florida at the Saddlebrook Tennis Academy.
Despite that win, the Rider University women's tennis team lost a non-conference match at Lafayette Wednesday afternoon.
"Michelle played one of the best matches I've seen in the past few seasons," said head coach Ed Torres. "She beat a teriffic player. Michelle was steady, hit the corners and really mixed up her shots. She also served well and it was really just an outstanding match. Kudos for her."
Normally playing at second or third singles, this was her first apperarance in the number one spot.
"We didn't have our two top players," said Torres. "I think with them, it would have been a much more competitive match. Everyone in the lineup was playing up one or two spots."
The Rider men and women are both back in action on Thursday against Wagner in a non-conference match at 2pm.
