Women Win, Men Lose vs. Wagner
Women: Rider University 6, Wagner College 1
Men: Wagner College 6, Rider University 1
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University tennis teams split a non-conference match against Wagner on Thursday afternoon with the women winning and the men losing.
"The women's match went according to form," said head coach Ed Torres. "We have a little more experience than Wagner did."
Freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won for the sixth time this season, with a 6-0, 6-2 straight sets victory at third singles.
Roche and Caravaglio teamed up for an 8-4 win at first doubles.
Eldridge and junior Jaclyn Giameo (Roselle Park) won at third doubles 8-2.
For the Rider men, senior Mike Kulpinski (Pennington/Notre Dame) won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles with junior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) and freshman Stephen Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) posting an 8-2 win at second doubles.
"We defeated Wagner in the fall but suffered an injury to Stephen Brand today and we were also missing a player due to class," Torres added. "The match was closer than the score indicated."
Both the men's and women's tennis teams host Loyola Maryland on Monday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at 2pm.
"Wagner and Rider are equally matched on the men's side," Torres added. "Wagner played well and you have to give them credit. They were steadier than we were."
