Rider at Penn Relays-Day One
PHILADELPHIA, PA-Several Broncs competed Thursday in the 118th edition of the Penn Relay Carnival
The women's Distance Medley Relay team of junior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), junior Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), senior Kristen Perrine (Brick/Brick Memorial) and senior Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) placed seventh in a Rider record time of 11:50.50. "They ran a great race," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "Those four have been committed all along here. They work hard, train hard and have had great races here at Penn before."
Graduate student Mike Soroko (Kinnelon) placed 15th in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:19.99). "We were hoping for a bit more," Hamer said. Soroko was an All-East steeplechaser last spring and is the Rider record holder but is still recovering from injuries. "He's still struggling, coming back from injuries. Hopefully he will make some more progress this week and put together as great race next weekend (MAAC Championships)."
Junior Sean McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pa/La Salle) competed in the 10,000m, finishing 33rd (32:23.80).
"Sean ran 31:11 so he was very close to the 31:08 he needed for IC4As," Hamer said. "That was our goal here tonight, to get that qualifier."
Sophomore Treasure Burke (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) placed 23rd of 26 in the College Women's Hammer Throw with a toss of 46.68m (153'1"). "It was a little bit off of what she was hoping for," Hamer said. "She might have been a little nervous, competing at this level, so we're hoping she takes this experience and uses it to her advantage in the future."
Rider competes in seven events at the Penn Relays on Friday.
