2012 Fall Schedule Announced

LAWRENCEVILLE--Nine matches, including four at home and a trip to the Monmouth Invitational comprise the 2012 Rider University men's fall tennis schedule, head coach Ed Torres announced.

Torres, a Rider grad and member of the Athletics Hall of Fame, will begin his 18th season as head coach on September 7-9 when the Broncs compete in West Long Branch at the Monmouth Invitational.

Rider opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at home against defending MAAC champion Fairfield on September 12.

The Stags won 16 matches in 2011-12 and advanced to the NCAA tournament before losing to top seed Southern California.  USC went on to win its fourth straight title.

Rider also has home matches against the New Jersey Institute of Technology (September 19), Philadelphia University (October 9) and a MAAC match against Saint Peter's University to conclude the fall slate on October 27.

The Broncs have road matches at St. Thomas Aquinas on September 22, Siena (MAAC match on September 29), Wagner (October 6), Drexel (October 15) and Mount St. Mary's (October 21).

"The schedule is a tough one," Torres said.  "That is the only way to prepare for the rigors of the MAAC.  We try to play three or four Philadelphia teams and also play some of the teams out of the Northeast Conference that we can be competitive with."

Rider defeated Philadelphia U. 5-4 and split two matches with Wagner, winning 4-3 in Staten Island last season.

Rider returns 11 letterwinners for the 2012-13 season including sophomore Stephen Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), senior Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) and senior John Spellman (Toms River/Toms River HS South).

"Having 11 players back, they are all veterans," said Torres who has 219 wins overall, including 93 with the men's team.  "With another year of experience under their belts and a strong work ethic this summer, I expect that we will be competitive in most if not all of our matches."

Brand and senior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) along with Carpenter and senior Milo Milosovici (Florence) comprise the top returning doubles partners for the Broncs.
