Rider Releases 2012-13 Schedule

LAWRENCEVILLE--After posting the best non-conference record (8-3) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference last season, the Rider University women's basketball team is looking to duplicate that effort when the Broncs open the 2012-13 season with an 11-game non-conference slate featuring opponents in six different leagues.

"We are excited about this year's non-conference schedule," said head coach Lynn Milligan, in her sixth season at Rider.  "We again believe that we have challenged ourselves with excellent opponents.  We will be able to compete against various conferences and different styles of play."

The eight wins in 11 games to open the 2011-12 season was the best 11-game start for the Broncs since the 1982-83 season when Rider also opened 8-3.

Rider begins the season on the road, at American East member Stony Brook on November 9. The Seawolves are coming off a 4-26 season and return 10 letterwinners. Rider defeated Stony Brook 53-41 in Alumni Gymnasium last season.

The home opener is Monday, November 12 when the Broncs face the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Alumni Gym.  The Highlanders are coming off a 13-17 record and will visit Lawrenceville under first year head coach Steve Lanpher.  NJIT returns 11 letterwinners from a squad that lost to Rider 60-50 in Newark last season.

On Friday, November 16, Mount St. Mary's visits Alumni Gym.  The Mount, out of the Northeast Conference, lost to Rider last season by a 53-44 score in Emmitsburg, Maryland, one of four road wins by the Broncs.  Mount St. Mary's returns 13 letterwinners to a team that went 14-16 last year.

Back to back Tuesday road games against feline nicknamed teams conclude the opening month of the season.  Rider travels eight miles on Route 206 to face Mercer County rival Princeton Tigers (November 20) before taking an hour long trip to Easton, Pennsylvania, when the Broncs face the Leopards of Lafayette on November 27.

Princeton, the three-time defending Ivy League champions, defeated the Broncs 75-55 in Alumni Gym in 2011-12.  The Tigers went 24-5 last season, including an undefeated Ivy League run (14-0) before losing to Kansas State in the NCAA tournament.  Princeton returns 10 letterwinners.

Lafayette, a member of the Patriot League, went 8-22 last season and the Leopards return 10 players, including Emily Homan, the sister of Rider grad Sarah Homan.  Rider defeated the Leopards 64-56 to open the 2011-12 campaign.

Rider competes at the Brown Classic December 1-2 in Providence, Rhode Island.  The Broncs open against the host Bears on the 1st and will face either Quinnipiac (Northeast Conference) or New Hampshire (America East) on the 2nd.  Brown (Ivy League) returns 13 players from a squad that went 16-12.

Quinnipiac returns 13 letterwinners from a team that went 22-10 and advanced to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).  New Hampshire went 16-14, advancing to the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2011-12.  The Wildcats return 10 letterwinners.

Army (Patriot League) visits Lawrenceville on Friday, December 7.  The last visit to Alumni Gym by the Black Nights resulted in a riveting 66-61 overtime win by Rider on December 12, 2007.  Army compiled a 14-16 record in 2011-12 and the Black Knights return 15 players for the upcoming season.

The middle of December finds the Broncs on the road for two straight games, at Pittsburgh on December 16 and at Central Connecticut State on December 21.

Pittsburgh went 8-22 last season and the Panthers return nine letterwinners for their final season in the Big East.  Pitt is scheduled to join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in July of 2013.  CCSU (Northeast Conference) returns 11 players from last season with the Blue Devils compiling a 13-16 record.

The final non-conference regular season game will be on Saturday, December 29 when Rider hosts St. Francis (NY).  The Terriers (Northeast Conference) return 12 letterwinners from a squad that lost to Rider 68-48 in Brooklyn, New York in 2011-12, enroute to a 4-25 record.

The 18-game MAAC schedule begins on January 4 when Rider hosts defending conference champion Marist.  Other MAAC home contests include Canisius on January 10, Saint Peter's January 24, Manhattan on January 31, Niagara on February 2, Fairfield on February 7, Loyola Maryland on February 17, Siena on March 1 and Iona to finish the regular season on March 3.

The MAAC schedule culminates in Springfield, Massachusetts at the Mass Mutual Center and the MAAC Championships March 7-11.  The MAAC schedule will be announced in September.

The Broncs return 10 letterwinners, including junior MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)) who earned Third Team All-MAAC honors last season after being named to the MAAC All-Rookie team in 2010-11 and red-shirt junior Shereen Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) who returns after missing all of last season with a knee injury.

"We have a veteran team that is excited about the season," Milligan added.  "They understand how important our non-conference games are in our preparation for the MAAC.  We all know the challenges that await us in January and February with the players and coaches that make our conference great and so competitive night in and night out."

All non-televised home games will be broadcast on BroncVision and MAAC.TV, the pay per view audio/video stream of Rider Athletics and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with Jeff Nolan and Dick Wiseman bringing you all of the action.  All games (home and away) will also be available on 107.7 FM The Bronc and
