Broncs Picked 8th in MAAC Preseason Poll
LAWRENCEVILLE-Despite returning nine starters from the 2011 squad that went 9-6-4, the Rider University women's soccer team has been picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2012.
"We don't pay much attention to these things, no matter if we are picked high or low," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome, who led Rider to its best overall season in seven years in 2011.
2011 champion Marist was picked to win the MAAC again this year. Fairfield is picked second and 2011 runner-up Loyola is picked third.
"Our goal is to be the best in the MAAC, everyday, in every aspect, in whatever we are doing that day," Hounsome said.
Rider will be led by Academic All-American Abi Cottam, who led the MAAC in goals, assists and points in 2011 as a junior to earn Second Team All-Region honors. Cottam was a First Team All-MAAC selection last year and is a Preseason All-MAAC pick this year.
The Broncs return 19 letterwinners.
"For us to be successful we need to integrate our freshmen into the team," said Hounsome, the 2010 MAAC Coach of the Year. "The more success our freshmen have the more success we'll have as a team."
Rider begins the season August 19 by hosting NJIT and hosts Howard August 24, both games at 5pm. Rider's first MAAC game is September 28, hosting Fairfield at 7pm.
