Broncs Look for 2-0 Start
Broncs Home Friday
The Rider women's soccer team will look to begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2001 when the Broncs host Howard University Friday at 5pm on the Ben Cohen Field.
The Broncs (1-0) began the season with a 1-0 double overtime win over NJIT on August 19. In that game freshman Tara Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) scored the game's only goal in the 108th minute of play and senior goalie Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made three saves for her first shutout.
Howard (0-2-1) tied Loyola 1-1 on Wednesday. Loyola is picked to finish third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this year.
Howard was 4-12-1 last season, 2-3 in the Great West Conference, the same conference as NJIT.
The Bison began the season losing to Radford 0-1 on the road and to Lafayette 0-2 at home.
"It was a real tough game with Howard last year," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "I'm expecting it to be another tight, close game. They are well organized and well coached."
Last year Rider defeated Howard 3-2 in overtime when Abi Cottam scored twice, including the game-winner.
An All-American candidate who earned Second Team All-Region honors last year as a junior, Cottam enters Friday's game fourth in Rider career points (64) and goals (22) and after her assist in the season opener against NJIT is tied for first in career assists with 20.
Rider out-shot Howard 15-5 in the game last year, played in Washington, D.C.
Rider and Howard have met four times, with Rider winning three.
Rider began the 2001 season a best-ever 3-0 but finished with a 9-10-2 record that year, including a 2-1 loss to Howard.
After Friday the Broncs travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to take on Mount Saint Mary's in a 3pm game Sunday afternoon.
