Ballay, Nichols Honored by MAAC
LAWRENCEVILLE-Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Tara Ballay was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for all games played prior to August 27.
Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter), in her first year as a starter, began the 2012 season with three consecutive shutouts, compiling 15 saves in wins over NJIT (double overtime), Howard and Mount Saint Mary's.
"Three consecutive shutouts to start the season is excellent," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "It demonstrates where she is now as an experienced goalkeeper and how she is coordinating the defensive unit as a whole to shut down the other team."
Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) began her collegiate career with two goals in her first two games, both game-winners. She scored on a header in the 108th minute of play to give Rider an overtime victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the season opener. She came back in her second collegiate game and scored to give Rider a 1-0 lead in a 2-0 win over Howard.
"Scoring two goals in your first two matches, and two game winners at that, is a brilliant way to start her collegiate career," Hounsome said.
The Broncs are 3-0 for just the second time in their 16-year history on the varsity level.
Rider hosts Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon. Rider has never been 4-0.
