Loyola University Maryland 3 Rider University 2
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
Marriott Greyhound Invitational
BALTIMORE, Md.--Leading two sets to one, the Rider University had a chance to match its win total from 2011 but couldn't hold on, losing to Loyola Maryland in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Friday evening in the opening round of the Marriott Greyhound Challenge.
Loyola won 25-19, 25-27, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11.
"The team as a collective played well," said head coach Christopher Feliciano. "We struggled as a whole but fought together as a team. Everyone contributed."
For the Broncs, sophomore Jaclyn Webber (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon) had a 'double-double' of 19 kills and 10 digs, junior Bridget Sheerin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) compiled a 'double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 41 assists and 13 digs for a 'double-double'.
Also for Rider (4-3, 0-1 MAAC), senior captain Brittany Gajewski (Whitehouse Station/ Hunterdon Central Regional), the reigning MAAC Libero of the Week, had 20 digs with freshman Alexa Becker (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) adding 10 digs.
"We were up 24-23 in the fourth set and didn't get a ball handling error call," Feliciano. "We don't make excuses but we feel that we won the match in four sets. We deserved to get the win and that's what is disappointing."
This would have been Rider's first win over the Greyhounds since the 2001 season. Rider has only defeated the 'Hounds in seven of 34 matches all-time.
Rider had its two-match winning streak snapped.
Rider plays Morgan State and Charleston Southern on Saturday in Baltimore on the final day of the tournament.
"We are going to regroup tonight and get back at it Saturday," Feliciano added.
