HAMILTON, N.Y.--The Rider University golf team opened the 2012 fall season at the Colgate Invitational, held at the par-72 Seven Oaks Golf Course.

The 54-hole tournament was cut down to 36 holes after severe weather cancelled the afternoon round on Saturday.

For the Broncs, junior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) had a two-day total of 152 (78-74) to place ninth out of 54 golfers.  Buttermark was two shots out of a tie for second place.

"James was part of the strong finish," said head coach Bob Whartenby.  "He played his last six holes at two under par to finish with a team low 74."

Rider finished in eighth place with a 642 after team rounds of 330 Saturday and 312 on Sunday.

"Today was a big improvement," Whartenby said.  "We had a good comeback round today posting a 312.  We got off to a slow start but finished strong."

Youngstown State won the tournament by 10 strokes with a 598 (301-297) and Bill Gaffney (YSU) took home the individual title with a one under par 143 (71-72).  Gaffney won by seven shots.

Also for Rider, senior Beau Guarino (Burlington Twp.) had a 75 on Sunday after an opening round of 81 to finish with a 156, tying for 21st.

"Beau had a great first tournament posting a solid 75 today," Whartenby said.  "He looks to be a key factor in our team scores in the tournaments coming up."

Senior Evan McGrain (West Windsor/W. Windsor-Plainsboro South) tied for 34th after a 162 (81-81), sophomore Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) was 50th with a 172 (90-82) and senior Chris Foster (Pittsgrove/Schalick) was 52nd with a 176 (90-86).

Colgate was the defending champion from 2010 as the tournament was cancelled due to weather last year.

Rider plays at the 54 hole Rutgers Invitational September 14-15.

"Next week we have Rutgers," Whartenby added.  "We always play well there and I'm expecting nothing different this year.  We are looking forward to it."
