Rider's Ippolite NEC Player/Rookie of the Week
SOMERSET--Freshman Rachel Ippolite (Woolwich Twp./Kingsway Regional) of the Rider University field hockey team was named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the Northeast Conference Monday afternoon.
Ippolite was recognized for all games played September 4-9.
Ippolite had a three point week, with a goal and an assist as Rider (3-1) scored a 2-0 upset win at Hofstra on Sunday.
A midfielder and back, Ippolite showed her value at both ends of the field in the shutout against the Pride.
"Rachel was a key defender in our overall team play," said head coach Lori Hussong. "Her productivity on both ends of the field is improving each time she is out there. She is hard working and spirited and we look forward to watching her continue to improve and gain confidence."
Ippolite assisted on Rider's first goal with 12 seconds left in the opening half as the Broncs took a 1-0 lead into intermission. Her second goal of the season gave Rider insurance with less than 21 minutes left in the game against the Pride.
This was Rider's first win against Hofstra (4-2) since the 2009 season.
Hofstra's only other loss this season was to nationally ranked Albany.
Rider won 35 of 41 games in the last two seasons with two of the six losses coming against Hofstra.
This is the second week in a row that a Bronc has earned an NEC Rookie of the Week accolade with freshman Allison Muschs honored last Tuesday after leading Rider to wins over Villanova and Colgate.
Ippolite leads Rider in scoring with five points (2g, 1a) and Muschs is tied for second in scoring with four points.
In the 13 seasons under Hussong, this is the 39th time that Rider has had a conference Rookie of the Week honoree.
Winners of three straight, Rider travels to the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening for a game against the Quakers at Franklin Field.
