Rider 11th of 15 teams after
Day One at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY--The Rider University golf team is in 11th place of 15 teams after the opening two rounds at the Rutgers Invitational.

The 54-hole competition is taking place at the par-71, 6,337 yard Rutgers University Golf Course in Piscataway.

Rider shot 310-306 for a 36-hole total of 616 and the Broncs are five shots behind Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Manhattan College for 10th place with the Jaspers shooting 304-307 (611).

"Overall we had a pretty consistent effort today," said head coach Bob Whartenby.  "Especially in the second round, we got off to a great start before finishing poorly.  With five holes left we were looking to shoot under 300 which is always a primary goal for me and the team. But we struggled on the way in."

For Rider after the opening 36 holes, junior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) is tied for 37th out of 84 golfers after rounds of 78 and 74 (152).

"James played very solid from tee to green all day but missed a bunch of putts but that could have easily been made," Whartenby said.

Sophomore Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) is one shot behind Buttermark and tied for 39th after rounds of 74 and 79 (153).

Also for the Broncs, senior Beau Guarino (Burlington Township) is tied for 53rd with a 155 (78-77), freshman Joe Hughes (Tabernacle/Seneca) is one shot behind Guarino and tied for 55th after rounds of 80 and 76 (156) and senior Evan McGrain (West Windsor/W. Windsor-Plainsboro South) is in 79th place after a 169 (85-84).

Saint Peter's University (288-288) and Monmouth University(292-284)  are tied for first after shooting 576 with USC Upstate two shots back after a 578 (289-289).

The host Scarlet Knights are in fourth place (585) followed by Fairfield University (586), Adelphi (591), St. Thomas Aquinas (593), Seton Hall (597) and Fairleigh Dickinson (599).

Lafayette College is in 12th place (618), followed by Daemen (620), Wagner (630) and St. Francis (NY) (668).

The final 18 holes are Saturday, beginning at 7:30am.

"As always I am looking to break 300 Saturday morning when we play the third final round," Whartenby added.

Rider was 14th of 16 teams (319-320-303) with a total of 942 at Rutgers last fall with Buttermark placing 34th after rounds of 78-76-73 (227).
