Manhattan College 6 Rider University 1
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University women's tennis team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Manhattan College 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
"Manhattan was the better team today," said head coach Ed Torres. "We also were battling some pretty windy conditions."
For Rider (0-2, 0-2 MAAC), sophomore Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won in straight sets at number two singles 6-2, 7-5.
"Michelle played a very good match," Torres said. "She beat an excellent player from Florida who she had lost to last season. She played an outstanding match."
Caravaglio teamed up with senior Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) to take five games at first doubles before losing 8-5.
Caravaglio won seven matches as a Rider rookie in 2011-12.
"Michelle is our most improved player," Torres added. "The key match for her last season was defeating the number one player from Lafayette. She has continued to improve and is gaining confidence."
Manhattan won 7-0 over Rider in Riverdale to open the fall 2011 season and the Jaspers defeated the Broncs 7-0 in 2010-11, 5-2 in 2009-10, 6-1 in 2008-09, 7-0 in 2007-08 and 5-2 in 2006-07.
The Rider men's tennis team hosts NJIT on Wednesday at 3pm. The Bronc women return to action on September 24 for a non-conference match at Monmouth, beginning at 3:30pm.
