CAMDEN--The Rider University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a rain shortened 8-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden Wednesday afternoon.
"We played well today," said head coach Ed Torres. "The benefits of playing a very tough schedule to open the season paid off today."
For Rider (1-3), junior Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles with senior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles.
Senior John Spellman (Toms River/Toms River HS South) was a winner at fourth singles (6-1, 6-1), senior Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles and senior Matt DiMartino (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) won 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
The second singles match was not completed due to rain.
In doubles play, Malfitano and junior Nick Lubold (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won 9-7 at first doubles, Laverty and DiMartino won at second doubles 8-1 and Carpenter and senior Milo Milosovici (Florence) posted an 8-2 win at third doubles.
"We are improving," Torres added. "Each time on the court, we are playing better. I was satisfied with the way we played, especially in the doubles play."
Both the Rider men's and women's tennis teams travel to Siena for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Saturday.
